About this Workshop: Noir as a genre has an important history. Since post-WWII, noir has captured the ethos of its time. Learn why it’s resurging, how to determine why you want to write noir and how to capture your particular style and voice. Noir can be hard-boiled and even literary. Explore what you can bring to the genre and why. The workshop includes examples from noir films and noir fiction, short exercises to discover your brand of noir and generous handouts. Topics to be covered: •What is noir and how it differs from crime, mystery, suspense, and thrillers •Why noir is having a resurgence •How to determine what kind of noir you want to write •Why starting with setting can develop your story •How character can evolve out of setting •Developing your noir voice •How plot can grow out of character and setting

She won an Elizabeth George Foundation grant, and her writing residencies include PLAYA, Soapstone, Vermont Studio Center, Villa Montalvo for the Arts, and Hedgebrook.
