Participating teachers will explore the craft of fiction writing with celebrated authors presenting craft talks at the conference. The Teachers as Writers Institute includes full attendance at Behind the Book: The Mechanics of Murder, as well as pre/post sessions conducted by the Oregon Writing Project. Graduate credit or PDUs are offered through the University of Oregon.

Wordcrafters offers a significant discount to teachers who also sign up for the Teachers as Writers Institute at UO.
The Teachers as Writers Institute seeks to:
- Increase teachers’ ability to craft fictional pieces with confidence and clarity.
- Increase teachers’ ability to teach fictional writing to their students.
- Increase teachers’ ability to judge the quality and value of their writing and the writing of their students.
- Decrease professional isolation through collaboration with peers and authors.
To receive University of Oregon graduate credit for this class, participating teachers must attend:
- (a) Oregon Writing Project pre and post sessions at Wordcrafters Behind the Book: The Mechanics of Murder
- (b) Three days of classes at Wordcrafters Behind the Book: The Mechanics of Murder.
- (c) One full day Saturday follow-‐up workshop.
Teachers must also:
- (a) Create and implement a lesson on fictional writing inspired by something learned at the conference.
- (b) Participate in a reading group with other participating teachers.
- (c) Submit a snippet of personal writing that illustrates the application of some aspect of writing fiction learned in the conference.
All assigned work must be completed by required date.
