Five weeks? Really?
Yes, this class is designed to help authors turn their manuscript into a published book in five weeks. To make this happen, class participants must have a finished manuscript and cover ideas, and be willing to devote additional time to the process outside of class. By week five, participants should have a finished proof, which they will then be able to sell online and purchase.
What kind of book can I publish in this class?
This class is geared toward publishing any memoirs, essays, novels or non-fiction books. We will not be able to handle books with photos, charts or books that require specialized formatting, such as poetry, correspondence, etc.
What do you mean by a finished manuscript?
The manuscript must be completely written, first of all, and edited to the author’s satisfaction. We will not have time to polish writing or to edit finished work. The degree of editing you would like is up to you, but the manuscript, which should be in Word or RTF format, must be ready to be published at the beginning of the class. If you are concerned with typos or grammatical errors, a review by an editor might be valuable.
In the first class, we will layout the text in a book format, and during the following week, you will have a chance to make minor changes, but the substantial work should be done pre-class.
How does publishing work?
This class will teach you how to set up an account and publish your book using print-on-demand printing services. You will be guided through publishing options, and at the completion of the class, you will be able to order books for your own use, as well as having them available through online retailers.
Will there be any additional costs?
Yes, but they will be minimal. The printer will provide an ISBN for free, or you may choose to purchase an ISBN, at a cost from $10 to $125. We will discuss the pros and cons before you make a decision. In addition, you will need to order a proof copy of your book, which should run no higher than $20. Once your class is finished, you will deal directly with the printer to order copies and receive royalty payments, if you make the book available for sale.
Does this class cover ebooks?
No, this class is focused on producing a print copy of your book. During the last class we will discuss options for converting your book into an ebook and making it available online.
